Team Carologistics successfully competed in the 2023 RoboCup Logistics League, hosted by the University of Bordeaux. Goal of the competition is to simulate a smart-factory environment in which autonomous robots use a limited set of production machines to produce and deliver orders on-demand within a deadline, while handling machine failures, navigation, scheduling, and manipulation tasks. This year’s iteration of the RoboCup saw a re-bound in participants to pre-pandemic levels with teams from 6 countries participating in the competition.
After qualifying for the main track, by proving the team’s systems capable of producing a simple product, Carologistics competed one on one against the other main-track teams in a round robin phase. By scoring the tournament’s high score of 229, under a new set of scoring rules, the team moved to the final against team GRIPS, securing the 2nd Place in the tournament.
“It is good that the league managed to attract new teams. The challenge to deploy intelligent robots inspires researchers around the world to advance the progress in various areas of artificial intelligence. Congratulations to team GRIPS for winning this time, I am looking forward for a rematch at the RoboCup 2024 in Eindhoven.“, says Prof. Gerhard Lakemeyer, head of the Knowledge-Based Systems Group at RWTH Aachen University and Spokesperson of the Department of Computer Science.
Prof. Alexander Ferrein, Trustee of the RoboCup Federation and Director of the MASCOR Institute said, “Robotics is characterized by various sources of uncertainties. Handling these uncertainties in a robust way is a demanding task which team GRIPS was able to handle better this year. My sincere congratulations to them. Team Carologistics is on a good way and will focus on increasing the robustness of all of their systems for the next year. Their goal is to set a new high score. Therefore, I am optimistic about next year’s performance. I also hope to see a continued increase in interest in the Logistics League again next year, which has recovered from the Corona-related relapse.”
Carologistics is an interdisciplinary team with backgrounds in computer science, mechanical engineering and robotics engineering. The team is made up of bachelor’s, master’s and PhD students from RWTH Aachen University and FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences. Since 2014, the team has been participating successfully in the Logistics League, winning several world championship titles, including 2021 and 2022. Carologistics was not the only Aachen team successful in Bordeaux with team ALeRT of FH Aachen placing 4th in their first participation in the Rescue League.
