Guest Talk: Probabilistic Databases - Managing uncertainty in data

Thursday, 23.11.2017, 11:00am

Location: RWTH Aachen University, Department of Computer Science - Ahornstr. 55, building E3, room 9u10

Speaker: Prof. Maurice van Keulen, University of Twente, NL

A recent development in the database community is the concept of a probabilistic database, a database that can transparently store and query data „with problems“: data that may possibly be wrong, where values are not certain, and so on. This presentation explains what a probabilistic is, what potential applications it has, what its foundations are, which variants exist, how queries can be evaluated efficiently, and finally what potential exists for fundamental research on this topic.
