Talk: Rail Traffic Planning and Capacity Analysis

Railway capacity modeling aims to determine the number of train paths that can be operated on a given infrastructure. Depending on the planning stage and input data availability a variety of different approaches including scheduling-based and stochastic methods have been proposed for this task.
In my talk I will give a non-exhaustive overview of the most widespread approaches and discuss how they relate to OR problems arising in railway infrastructure and timetable planning. In the second part of the talk the focus will be on a specific problem in long term traffic planning: the interplay of operational quality and infrastructure condition. In this context I will present a QBD process approach for the joint modeling of train service and infrastructure availability. Apart from providing a more realistic assessment of delay build-up and the effectively marketable capacity the integration of performance and availability modeling facilitates a service-oriented analysis of the resilience of traffic systems.
